Southeast Island School District
Southeast Island School District serves small coastal communities on Prince of Wales Island and surrounding waterways, including Coffman Cove, Hollis, Kasaan, Naukati, Port Alexander, Thorne Bay, and Whale Pass, alongside AK-Trails correspondence. A flagship learning initiative is the Island Fresh Student Enterprise, where students cultivate produce in greenhouse aquaponics systems at Coffman Cove and Thorne Bay, selling fresh harvests to local school cafeterias and community markets.
Career and technical pathways connect students directly to regional industries. Highlights include the four-course Teaching Trail education sequence with dual-credit ties to the University of Alaska and an introductory engineering and design course for maritime and STEM interests. Several other pathways remain in development, so families should confirm the courses available at their child's school before planning a sequence. Families consult separate campus handbooks for classroom expectations, sports eligibility, and correspondence guidelines.
