Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Calendar 2027-2028

Fairbanks North Star Borough School District organizes neighborhood pathways from K–5 elementary schools into grades 6–8 middle schools and grades 9–12 comprehensive high schools. Families seeking specialized learning environments can choose K–8 options such as Ladd, Barnette Magnet, and local charter schools. Barnette students in grades 1–8 complement core curricula with quarterly Explorations electives. Families use the district Centralized Application Portal to apply for Barnette Magnet, Chinook and Discovery Peak charters, Hutchison High, and out-of-boundary transfers, with out-of-area students providing their own daily transportation.

Home-based learners select from two structured models. In the eLearning program, students remain enrolled at their neighborhood campus and receive online instruction directly from district teachers. Fairbanks BEST Homeschool operates as a distinct correspondence program where parents direct their child's curriculum under the mentorship of a certified BEST educational specialist. Both programs maintain full eligibility for sports and extracurricular activities at the student's neighborhood boundary school.
