Northwest Arctic Borough School District
Northwest Arctic Borough School District serves the regional hub of Kotzebue alongside surrounding Iñupiat villages. In Kotzebue, students attend June Nelson Elementary and Kotzebue Middle High School, while outlying communities are anchored by local K–12 village campuses.
College and career preparation begins in middle school, where students in grades 6–12 develop electronic Personal Learning and Career Plans (PLCP) via AKCIS. Through the STAR of the Northwest Magnet School, high schoolers earn dual high school and college credits in partnership with the Alaska Technical Center and Chukchi College. Enrolled STAR students live in the Kotzebue residential dormitories and take classes at Kotzebue Middle High School via a selective application process.
The district actively supports indigenous Iñupiaq language revitalization with online vocabulary recordings in Coastal and Upper Kobuk dialects. In grades 4–8, specialized northern lights curriculum kits blend Earth science with traditional Iñupiat Elder oral histories and digital learning resources.
